Horn Book Review

(Primary) ""Babymouse, babymouse, babymouse!"" That's the chant our heroine hears as she daydreams of being a rock star. But reality, in the large form of bully Felicia Furrypaws, once again intrudes. First, Felicia humiliates Penny Poodle by mocking her hairstyle and then cruelly makes a prediction for Babymouse's musical future. ""I don't know why you bother. You're still going to be last flute! You're a loser!"" But when humiliated Penny teams up with the off-key flautist, loyal readers know who will triumph in the end. The charm of this series lies in the lengthy daydream sequences, dripping with pink, which treat the reader to the inner workings of Babymouse's mind. At one point, we see Babymouse in her locker, which then gets spun up in a tornado + la The Wizard of Oz. Evil Felicia rides the wind on her bicycle and is later squashed by the falling locker. ""I guess I'm not in school anymore,"" quips Babymouse. A fast-moving plot, hilarious situations, and clever connections add up to a tale almost as perfect as Babymouse thinks she can be. Encore!
