Horn Book Review

(Preschool) Five short chapters relate the goings-on in Bubbaville when the kinfolk decide to come for a visit. There's the cleaning, the bathing, and the sprucing up (faithful dog Beau sports a new bandanna while Baby Bubba is all decked out in a sailor suit: ""It was tight. It was stiff. It was scratchier than the toilet brush""). And when Granddaddy Bubba, Grandma Ruby, Aunt Sapphire, and froufrou Cousin Arlene (with her froufrou dog, Bitsy) finally arrive, there's all that kissing. For toddlers taking their own baby steps toward understanding how story works, this third entry in the series offers a progressive plot that begins with predictable events but climaxes with a great surprise. Howard's energetic watercolor illustrations, with loose lines and lots of colorful detail, create a down-home setting that complements Appelt's colloquial voice. Yeehaw! (c) Copyright 2010.
